<p class="editor-paragraph"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of the most significant and ancient traditions of the Catholic Church, celebrating the moment when Mary, having finished the course of her earthly life, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory. Unlike other saints who await the resurrection of their bodies at the end of time, the Church teaches that Mary was granted this unique privilege because of her role as the Mother of God and her freedom from all sin. This event is not just a historical belief but a "holy day of obligation," a moment for the faithful to stop and reflect on the destiny that God promises to all who follow Him with a devoted heart.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">The roots of this belief go back to the earliest centuries of Christianity. While the Scriptures do not explicitly describe the moment of the Assumption, the early Church recognized that the "Ark of the Covenant", the woman who carried the Son of God, should not be subject to the decay of the grave. In 1950, Pope Pius XII officially defined the Assumption as a dogma of faith, confirming what millions had believed for generations: that Mary’s physical body joined her soul in heaven. This teaches us that our bodies are sacred and that the physical world we live in is deeply connected to the spiritual world to come.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">The Assumption matters to us today because it provides a powerful sense of hope. In a world that can often feel heavy with suffering or loss, Mary’s Assumption serves as a "sign of sure hope and solace." She represents the first of humanity to experience the fullness of the Resurrection, showing us where we are meant to go. Her life was one of constant "yes" to God—from the moment the Angel Gabriel appeared to her, to the foot of the Cross, and finally to her entrance into heaven. Her example encourages us to live our daily lives with the same trust, knowing that our ultimate home is with God.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">We celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption on August 15. It is a day of joy and triumph, often marked by the blessing of fruits and herbs in many cultures to symbolize the "first fruits" of the harvest and Mary as the first fruit of the Resurrection. St. Mary, in her Assumption, is the patron saint of many countries and is honored as the Queen of Heaven. Following this initial experience, he returned to the university to complete his master's degree and subsequently rejoined the division in the fall of 2000. Since then, Mr. Baptista has taught every grade level at École St. Mary, spanning both the French and English streams.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Throughout his tenure, Mr. Baptista has been deeply involved in enriching the school's co-curricular environment. His contributions are marked by a deep commitment to both student life and divisional excellence. He has been instrumental in organizing the school Sports Day and intramural program, coaching basketball across elementary and junior high levels, and leading the school choir and spearheading community outreach events at local nursing homes. Beyond the classroom, his leadership extends to the divisional level, where he has played a pivotal role in piloting the new Social Studies curriculum and contributing his expertise to assessment committees and teacher negotiations.&nbsp;</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Principal of École St. Mary, Mrs. Keira Bouchard, shares about Mr. Baptista: </span><br><i><em class="editor-text-italic" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">“We are ecstatic as a school community to have Mr. Baptista stepping into a formal leadership role at École St. Mary. <p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">On Friday, March 13, 2026, staff from across Holy Spirit Catholic School Division gathered together as one community to celebrate the Sacred Liturgy and deepen their understanding of the structure of the Bible.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">This year marks the first of the division’s three-year faith plan, </span><i><em class="editor-text-italic" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Open Wide the Doors – Sent to Share Christ’s Love</em></i><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">. We have received our registration updates and new registrations at a much higher rate this year than in previous years. We have been analyzing the data, consulting with our principals, and weighing out how we can best serve our students and families through this process of change. We committed to providing clear communication to families about their requests on or after March 9, and feel confident that we can adhere to that timeline. Families will be hearing about the status of their registration from schools shortly, if they have not already. As a reminder, transportation rules as previously communicated remain the same for parents making requests for out-of-boundary registration; no transportation will be provided, other than for grandfathered students. </em></i></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><i><em class="editor-text-italic" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">We are excited for the future of our schools in Lethbridge and across the division.&nbsp;</em></i></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><br></p>

As part of a provincial rollout of 476 specialized teams, our division has been allocated five new Complexity Teams, representing a transformative and hopeful step forward for our students, staff, and families.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Each team, comprised of one teacher and two educational assistants, will be strategically integrated into our classrooms.
